Philips
The record label was a division of Philips, the Dutch-based electronics giant , and was originally set up in 1950. Twelve years later, in 1962, Philips and Deutsche Grammophon, owners of the Polydor label, set up a joint venture, Phonogram. Both Philips and Polydor issued records in Africa during the 1960s, then in 1972 Phonogram merged with Polydor to form a new company, Polygram. At this point, the Philips label all but disappeared in East Africa.Press to see what we have in stock

Polydor
The East African division of Polydor was set up in 1968. Early recordings were made at the Associated Sound studios in Nairobi and some 45s carry its logo as in the picture above right. Before 1972, Polydor was a subsidiary of Deutsche Grammophon. That year it merged with Philips and after that the label became the company’s main outlet for East African music.Press to see what we have in stock

Special Baruti
A City Sounds label dedicated to recordings of Special Baruti - the name means Special Explosive in Kiswahili - a band that hailed from the far west of Tanzania according to the Wanamuziki Tanzania blog and also recorded for the Sounds So Sweet and Shemeji labels.Press to see what we have in stock

Sukumuna
The Muchatha Boys were a Kikuyu group although it is unclear whether they are connected to the Muchatha Band who recorded for the Kiang’ombe Mwenda Sound label. Muchatha is just north of Nairobi and these records look to be self-financed efforts by the band’s leader Peter Mbui. Since there are clearly other records on the label, the band presumably enjoyed a degree of local fame.Press to see what we have in stock

Sun Eclipse
One-off self-produced record by Kikuyu musician Peter Gaithuma and his band. Having 1973 so prominent on the label seems a bit odd as the title translates as 'The Cry of JM' and the song appears to be about the death of JM Kariuki, a Kenyan socialist politician who was assassinated in 1975.Press to see what we have in stock
