The Smyekhersons
Most active in the 1960s and early 1970s, the Symekhersons were formed by Morris Joseph Opember Symekher (1940-2008), pictured. The Luhya group had a string of hits that included Guerilla Farewell, Kasumba, Welcome to Africa, Solinjila and Kingsize Woman, though this discography so far includes only Welcome to Africa on the CMS label.
Once Symekher’s musical career ended he went on to become first a customs investigations officer and then under-secretary in the Kenyan Ministry of Transport and Communications, Water, Cooperatives and Finance until his retirement.
